【Regional Revitalization】
“Regional revitalization through sustainable tourism is an initiative aimed at bringing lasting economic, social, and environmental benefits to local communities via tourism. By valuing and preserving local nature and culture, it seeks to develop tourism from a long-term perspective while enhancing the quality of life for residents and stimulating the regional economy.”
At Marukoma Onsen Ryokan, we are proud to contribute to regional revitalization through the following initiatives.
- “Striking a Balance Between Environmental Conservation and Tourism”
In Shikotsu Lake, located within a national park, we are committed to sustainable tourism—preserving the pristine nature and delicate ecosystems while minimizing our environmental footprint. - Revitalizing the Local Economy
We actively generate employment opportunities in Chitose and surrounding areas, ensuring that the benefits of tourism circulate and stay within the local community. - “Respect for Culture”
We promote the preservation and revitalization of local traditions by leveraging unique regional cultures as valuable tourism assets. By welcoming visitors who seek to understand and appreciate these traditions, we actively support the safeguarding of cultural heritage. - “Sustainable Infrastructure and Resource Utilization”
We are committed to sustainable operations through the use of renewable energy, effective waste management, and eco-conscious resource utilization across our facilities and services.
“As tourism evolves in step with the region’s long-term development, it transforms into a sustainable and compelling experience — not just for travelers and guests, but for the local community as well.”

Marukoma Onsen Ryokan – A Lakeside Retreat on Shikotsu
Founded in 1915, Marukoma Onsen Ryokan is a historic hot spring inn nestled on the serene shores of Lake Shikotsu in Hokkaido. Known for its open-air panoramic bath with breathtaking lake views, the ryokan also boasts a rare natural hot spring that flows directly from the lakebed – a truly unique experience found only in a few places in Japan.
The mineral-rich waters, naturally cloudy and soothing, reflect the deep connection between the land and its history. Guests can savor seasonal Japanese cuisine crafted with local ingredients, served either in a traditional kaiseki style or grilled over an open irori hearth – a nod to the timeless culinary traditions of the region.
With nature, healing waters, and authentic flavors, Marukoma offers a soul-soothing escape from the stress of modern life.
