【Sakura Quality】We have been awarded the international SDGs certification: Sakura Quality – An ESG Practice.

“As Marukoma Onsen enters its 110th year, we embark on a new journey toward sustainable tourism—reducing environmental impact and growing hand in hand with the local community.”
Marukoma Onsen Co., Ltd. (Head Office: 7 Horobinai, Chitose City / CEO: Kazuo Hinokamishita) is proud to announce that its operated property, “Lakeside Inn Shikotsuko Marukoma Onsen Ryokan,” has been awarded the “Sakura Quality An ESG Practice” certification by the Japan Hotel Appraisal (JHA) Tourism Quality Certification Division.
This prestigious certification, based on standards approved by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), recognizes accommodations in Japan that demonstrate exceptional commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Marukoma Onsen Ryokan is the first hot spring inn in Hokkaido to achieve this honor. The certification evaluates facilities against a rigorous set of 172 criteria, primarily focused on environmental sustainability, and is granted only to those that meet these exacting standards.
This recognition underscores our dedication to sustainable hospitality and responsible tourism for future generations.

【Background of the Certification Acquisition】
Marukoma Onsen Ryokan began its journey in December 1915 as a humble thatched-roof inn nestled in a remote land surrounded by a primeval forest and a serene lake. As we mark our 110th anniversary in 2025, we remain steadfast in our mission to preserve the region, its natural environment, and the culture of onsen. The founder, Hatsutaro, once stood before this breathtaking landscape and declared, “I have never seen a world so beautiful and full of peace.”
To ensure that the same words can be spoken a century from now, we have chosen to pursue this certification—not only as a testament to our values but also as a guiding principle for the future of our inn.

At Marukoma Onsen Ryokan by Lake Shikotsu, we are committed to sustainability and environmental responsibility. In an effort to reduce plastic waste, we have eliminated in-room plastic amenities and instead provide water in pitchers in guestroom refrigerators. Hydration stations are also available throughout the property to help minimize single-use plastic bottles.
Sustainability has been a core focus throughout our renovation projects. When constructing our outdoor sauna, we installed an off-grid, electricity-free sauna heated by a pellet stove using locally sourced thinning wood and recycled materials. In the lobby and lounge renovation, we incorporated reclaimed Sapporo soft stone, a local material, into the design, blending tradition with conscious living.
In collaboration with local businesses, we’ve developed a craft beer made with pure Lake Shikotsu water, donating a portion of sales to environmental conservation efforts. Our commitment to the local community is equally strong: our staff actively participate in local governance and work closely with the fisheries cooperative to manage and protect the endemic “Shikotsu-ko Chippu” fish species.
We are proud to have received certification for our SDG initiatives, and we remain dedicated to delivering a serene, high-quality hot spring retreat while promoting biodiversity, reducing environmental impact, and deepening ties with our regional community. We look forward to continuing our journey toward a more sustainable future.

Founded in 1915, Marukoma Onsen Ryokan is a historic hot spring inn nestled on the serene shores of Lake Shikotsu in Hokkaido. Known for its open-air panoramic bath with breathtaking lake views, the ryokan also boasts a rare natural hot spring that flows directly from the lakebed – a truly unique experience found only in a few places in Japan.
The mineral-rich waters, naturally cloudy and soothing, reflect the deep connection between the land and its history. Guests can savor seasonal Japanese cuisine crafted with local ingredients, served either in a traditional kaiseki style or grilled over an open irori hearth – a nod to the timeless culinary traditions of the region.
With nature, healing waters, and authentic flavors, Marukoma offers a soul-soothing escape from the stress of modern life.
